Did you know that heavy backpacks can hurt kids backs? This week is a big week for children returning to school.  When your child puts a backpack on their back, is it comfortable and secure and at the correct weight?  School can be challenging, so ensuring they are as comfortable as possible is important to their physical and mental development. Heavy school bags can contribute to long term back pain.  When your child packs their bag, if it is incorrectly packed or fitted, it can cause long term damage.  Adult back pain may stem from childhood activities, including a heavy school bag.

According to an international study, daily backpack carrying is a frequent cause of discomfort for school children. School backpacks were felt to be heavy by 79.1% of children, to cause fatigue in 65.7% and to cause back pain by 46.7%

So here are some tips.

  • Never carry more than 10% of your body weight.
  • Wear your bag over both shoulders.
  • Pack the heaviest items closest to your back.
  • Pack only what you need
